With the county’s new P25 digital trunking system, the audio quality has taken a noticeable hit compared to the old MPD repeaters. The main reason is simulcast—multiple sites transmitting the same signal at the same time. Our current scanner, the BCD996P2, struggles with simulcast distortion and was really designed for conventional systems where only one site is active at a time.
A new scanner was just purchased: the SDS200. I hesitated to spend $750 without knowing whether it would truly make a difference, but after testing a friend’s unit, the improvement was dramatic. You’re going to hear the difference immediately.
Most of the funding for upgrades like this has already come from viewers like you. We’re back to zero at the moment, so if you’d like to help replenish the equipment fund, it would be appreciated by far more than just me.
